Mediterranean Music

The Mediterranean was often considered and seen as a single cultural area, but this is far from the truth. Because it spans through three very different regions, southern Europe, North Africa and the western parts of Asia, the music of these parts is very various, rich and unique. This diversity is what it makes it so special, how it manages to coexist, learning about the others and ignoring them. The question is, of course, what to Mediterranean countries have in common? They have six thousand years of history together, during which they came into close contact and conflicts with one another, encountering each others art. The main characteristics of this music are solistic singing, vocality being pushed into the high register, usage of melismatic melodies. The themes of the songs are very different as well. The Mediterranean presents itself as an assembly of many localized realities, specific musical practices for some social or cultural identity. There are without a doubt many very talented people in the world. Some are artists, some are musicians and others dance. Music is such a great part of our culture that you would think there would be more opportunities for musicians. Ironically, choosing a career in music is one of the hardest things a person can do, even with a bachelor degree, Aside from going into teaching, the rest of the musical field is very competitive and very hard to get your foot in the door. So does a bachelor degree in music really mean anything? Well, we'll leave that debate for those who feel like waging it. For the purpose of this article, we'll just give you a basic idea of what to expect from a Bachelor of Arts program in music.

The first year of your bachelor degree in music usually revolves around an introduction to music itself. You'll learn the many different forms of classic music and cover the various eras. You'll probably learn about a number of composers like Back, Mozart and Chopin. You won't begin to get into any in depth analysis of any of the material. It's simply to give you a brief history of music and aquatint you with the different styles. Rarely does an intro course cover modern music such as jazz, rock and blues.

Along with your music course you'll have to take the usual requirements such as English, History, maybe a math or science. Each college has different requirements for their bachelor program, regardless of what you major in. So it is difficult to generalize in this area. The common theme however, is that you usually only have to take a minimum of those "other" courses.

Bachelor Degree - Music

After you have taken you introductory music courses, which are usually all of your first year, you then move into whatever your specialty is going to be. This can cover anything from composition to performance.

If you're going to major in music composition, you're going to have to take a number of courses focusing on composition. These begin as very basic and then, as they progress, become quite advanced. Your early courses will simply focus on how to read and write music. You'll learn what a musical staff is, what the notes are, time signatures, tempos, etc. As the courses become more advanced, you will begin to actually write your own compositions. Your final independent project before graduation will usually involved writing a major piece of work such as a sonata or concerto.

For those going into music performance, it's a little more difficult. They don't teach you an instrument in college. You have to already be fairly proficient with whatever instrument you play. They will actually audition you to see if you qualify for their bachelor program. If you do, the remainder of your time in school will involve learning quite a number of pieces until graduation when you have to perform a major piece of work in front of a lot of people.

And then, after all of this and you actually graduate, good luck in finding work.

Teaching music may be the only thing you get to do.

We smile, we love, we cry. We, the human beings experience a wide spectrum of emotions in our life. Some of them are expressed while others die in our own mind. But from time immemorial, our emotions have been voiced through music. Music, which is composed of seven distinct tunes, is actually an expression of human emotions.

Music is characterized by certain qualities like, pitch, melody, rhythm, and frequency. And each type of music is again characteristic by certain degrees of these above mentioned qualities. A rhythmic music characterizes joy while a melody expresses romance. Again, a melody also expresses sorrows. For instance, Latin music is mostly featured by rhythm and certain genre of tune. Latin music is an expression of Bohemian lifestyle which very much complements Latin culture. Variation in melodies and rhythm leads to expression of varieties of emotions. If we look back to Western Classical, It connects us to something universal about human emotions. It makes us reach a transcendental stage of mind. However some composers opine that emotions conveyed through music is something quite abstract and varies according to the different perception of different individuals. One of the notable composers of Western Classical music was, Ludwig Van Beethoven, who gifted the world with musical masterpieces despite of being paralyzed with deafness at very young age (twenty eight). He can be regarded as the profounder of Romantic era of Western classical. Eastern Classical or specifically Indian Classical music has a number of sections and categories. However the two major sections are Hindustani Music from North India and the Carnatic Music from South India.

Each of the songs are known as "Ragas". The melodies contained in each of these "ragas" reflects various moods according to different times during the day. The Indian Classical music is mainly monophonic, that is, it is based on a single line of melody and has to be sung at a specific rhythm. Any deviation from the above rule is considered as a mistake. Even Folk music conveys something about the culture and lifestyle of a particular region. To be more specific, it generally narrates some popular folk tales of that region. When lyrics are put in a tune, it becomes a song. However, music can also be purely instrumental where one derives pleasure from the tune only. Beautiful notes of pianos, violin, guitars, expresses emotions without any words. Music can express most of human emotions. It expresses joy, ecstasy, romance, and also sorrows, pathos, and agony. In the words of P.B Shelly "Our sweetest songs are those which tells us our saddest thoughts". Surprisingly, a simple song which is sung from the heart gives us more pleasure than a complex one which is often influenced by human artifacts. Maybe this is a reason why pop songs and rocks are also quite popular today. It is also quite true that likings for particular kind of music largely depends upon the temperaments of individuals. This is the reason why some prefer soft melodies while some like hard rocks. It can be reasonably argued that music is not only an expression of emotions, it is emotion itself. Music without an emotional message is like vacuum. It is like a flower without essence.

The impression of music in human mind is beautifully depicted by William Wordsworth in his poetry "The Solitary Reaper".
