Established in 1869, when the country was part of the Russian Empire, the Estonian Song Festival became an important touchstone for national identity. In 1959, the Tallinn Song Stage was built for the festival, and the festival played an important role in politics once more when in 1988 the grounds were filled with 300,000 Estonians singing patriotic hymns, galvanising the end of Soviet rule. The grounds continue to host the Song Festival every five years, as well as local and international performers. For Music students on school trips, this is an excellent opportunity to discover the vital cultural legacy of music in Estonia.
Toompea Castle
A striking monument and key piece of local heritage, Toompea Castle is a particularly fascinating attraction for History students, but makes an impressive addition to itineraries for those undertaking school trips in any subject. Sitting atop a limestone hill in central Tallinn, the castle crowns the city, providing a superb vantage point from which to consider Tallinn's past and future. There has been a castle of some sort on this site ever since the 10th or 11th century, making it one of the oldest inhabited parts of the city; it has been rebuilt many times since then, having been taken by the Danes in 1219 and later becoming a strategic fortification when Tallinn was an important medieval crossroads. Today, the castle upholds its illustrious legacy by housing the Parliament of Estonia.
Kadriorg Palace
Built in the eighteenth century for Catherine I of Russia, this Baroque palace offers another interesting piece of Estonian history. Abandoned by the Russian rulers, it was extensively renovated in the 1930s by Estonia's first president. It is of particular appeal for those on school trips, both for its buildings and meticulously designed grounds and as the site of the Art Museum of Estonia.
