Facts About Music

Music is one of the arts which so sharpened our sense of participation in the world that it gave a much greater meaning to life, it reflects the mood of the times, then as now as always. The great thing about music is that it appeals to everybody; from children to grandmas to teenagers there are so many different types of music from classical to nursery rhymes to pop, rock, hip hop, house, indie, rock, soul. There is something for everybody to enjoy.

Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas from chop shop records said that established acts often command licensing fees of ,000 and up for a song placement in a TV show. Though the defining work of the late Isaac Hayes career, the award-winning theme from shaft was but a snippet of the groundbreaking music for which the soul man was responsible.

Jerry Wexler, famed record producer, not only coined the phrase rhythm and blues, the legendary music producer was one of the key architects of the genre. He revolutionized popular music with seminal, superstar-making recordings of acts such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and others.

Facts About Music

After ten years, modern worship music has become an established genre that's likely be a part of Christian music for generations to come, though it's in serious need of creative spark.

One recent study of 7500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry, and math. Simply stated, music students as a whole enjoy greater college success.

Music, Products and Commercialization

Buying rights to songs for the promotion of commercial products has become more and more popular. It is so common now that it is difficult to hear a song you used to enjoy for the sake of the song and not think of a product. And this is just what advertisers want to happen for you.

What songs are being used with what products? Can you recall any? Maybe it has become subliminal already for you as well. Here are a few songs and the companies that are using them:

o "Dream On" by Aerosmith - Buick
o "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin - Cadilac
o "Beyond The Sea" by Bobby Darin - Carnival Cruises
o "Melissa" by The Allman Brothers - Cingular/AT&T Wireless
o "Happy Together" by The Turtles - Clinique
o "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson - Coke with Lime
o "Love Train" by The O'Jays - Coors
o "Ain't That A Shame" by Fats Domino - Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper
o "You Sexy thing" by Hot Chocolate - Dr. Pepper
o "Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake Your Booty by KC and The Sunshine Band - Fidelity Investments

Music, Products and Commercialization

The list goes on. On the flip side of the coin, we also hear artists using brand names of products in their music. How about Janis Joplin's song Mercedes Benz or Paul Simon singing about his Kodachrome. Today, if an artist is using a namebrand, you can be sure they have been paid to insert the product name into their song. Companies will go so far as to advertise for selling space in lyrics to advertisers.

What are some other products or trade names mentioned by artists? Here are a few:
o Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos
o Corona and Lime - Shwayze
o Little Red Corvette - Prince
o Life In Technicolor- Coldplay
o Poprocks and Rock - Green Day
o Volvo Driving Soccer Mom- Everclear
o My Adidas - Run DMC
o Maybellene - Chuck Berry
o Red Barchetta - Rush
o Louboutins - Jennifer Lopez

For a company to use an artist's song they must purchase the music rights. Some companies will re-record a song as the rights are then cheaper. Re-recording the song leaves you recalling the song somewhere in your mind but maybe it just quite isn't the same. Some companies that rerecorded songs make a parody of it. For instance Burger King remixed the song "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy. Some companies just re-record music such as Buick with Nina Simone's "Feeling Good".

Music is not limited to selling products of course. There are many films and television shows that love to use music to either promote nostalgia or emphasize a feeling. How many of you can hear the Beatles song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and not think of the TV show Life Goes On? Likewise, many films and production companies make songs popular and mainstream after putting them into their movies or these companies even hire artists to write songs specifically for their productions. The movie Top Gun had composers write the song Danger Zone and then sought out artists to perform it. Originally they asked Bryan Adams then Toto, but ultimately they went with Kenny Loggins. The song went on to be on the Billboard Hot 100.

Advertisers want to invoke emotion as do film producers, so what better way than to use music. Likewise, artists want to strike emotional cords and sometimes that involves the products of our lives. Both can often go hand-in-hand whether we like it or not.

Essence of Mind - Try and Fail - Music Review

Essence of Mind's electro-rock Try and Fail is riddled with teenage angst, relationships issues and break-ups. The album never strays far from these issues for long and gets tedious fast. Great in bits and pieces with a solid sound throughout; this is a mood based album especially good for those suffering from a traumatic recent break up and needing a good old-fashioned vent. With a strong rooting in pop rock with a slight synth bent these tracks could be used to break up more hardcore play lists or infuse a bit of diversity within any music diet.

Try And Fail is divided into a fast first half and a slower mellower second half. In the second half often sounds whiny and doesn't have the same punch, attitude or catchiness of the first half, coming across as underpowered and tacked on.

The catchy pop rock guitar riffs and synthesizers awaken a sort of perverse vicarious nostalgia for an emotionally charged and turbulent teenage period I never really had. It seems a sort of right of passage to have intense and traumatic relationships full of stupidity, innuendo and pop rock - something I never really had for better or worse.

Essence of Mind - Try and Fail - Music Review

Another shortcoming of Try and Fail is the lead singer's very samey vocals throughout the album, if the lyrics don't get to you first it will be the vocals that ultimately make for a tedious album experience. If you are the sort of person who prefers to listen to custom play lists instead of albums, you many never have this issue but after forcing to hear the whole album through a couple of times I quite wanted to tear my ears off. It isn't just the vocals either it is also the arrangement of instruments and inexorably consistent style.

Try And Fail has its good and bad but it shouldn't displease fans of Essence of Mind's Watch Out EP and could indeed poach fans of similar music from the mainstream.

Music History - Hip Hop, Rap, R&B

In the early 1970s, the cultural movement of hip hop music was born. Hip hop's fast paced music style is made of two parts; the rhythmic delivery of rap and the use ofinstrumentation by a DJ. Hip hop music also brought with it a fashion of its own, the fashion helped to represent this newly created music.

Hip hop music has its roots from West African music and African-American music. The first rap song to be put onto a vinyl record was, "Rapper's Delight", a song by the Sugarhill Gang back in the 1970s. This is when block parties started becoming the norm in New York City, which gave hip hop and rap the chance to explode in popularity. Hip hop's instrumentation came from funk, R&B, and disco, when combined together make this dynamic type of music. When the DJs at these block parties learned what the people liked, they began mixing these vinyl records and created music that played continuously with amazing transitions between
songs. Hip hop was actually created by a DJ named Kool Herc, a Jamaican that had moved to the United States with a style that consisted of mixing music by using two copies of the same record. Many of the poor Jamaican's in the town could not afford vinyl records, so huge stereo systems were set up so that many could here the rhythmic beats. These stereo systems were the kick-off for the beginning of the
evolution of block parties. So with the musical talent of these amazing DJs, with the use of vinyl record mixing, the culture of hip hop and rap music was born.

History of R & B

Music History - Hip Hop, Rap, R&B

R&B, which stands for Rhythm and Blues, was the greatest influence on music around the world for most of the 20th century's second-half. Rhythm and Blues is a term with a broad sense, but typically recognizing black-pop music. This type of music was introduced to the world by artists' combining the music styles of jazz and blues. R&B is actually what was later developed into what we know as rock and roll. In the 1970s, the term R&B was being used to describe soul and funk music styles, which today we know it describes Rhythm and Blues. Along with being influenced by jazz and blues, R&B also had influences from gospel and disco music. Disco's downturn in the 1980s opened the door for R&B to truly take-off in popularity.

Music is more than entertainment in Estonia; it is deeply entwined with the nation's history and culture. Established in 1869, when the country was part of the Russian Empire, the Estonian Song Festival became an important touchstone for national identity. In 1959, the Tallinn Song Stage was built for the festival, and the festival played an important role in politics once more when in 1988 the grounds were filled with 300,000 Estonians singing patriotic hymns, galvanising the end of Soviet rule. The grounds continue to host the Song Festival every five years, as well as local and international performers. For Music students on school trips, this is an excellent opportunity to discover the vital cultural legacy of music in Estonia.

Toompea Castle

A striking monument and key piece of local heritage, Toompea Castle is a particularly fascinating attraction for History students, but makes an impressive addition to itineraries for those undertaking school trips in any subject. Sitting atop a limestone hill in central Tallinn, the castle crowns the city, providing a superb vantage point from which to consider Tallinn's past and future. There has been a castle of some sort on this site ever since the 10th or 11th century, making it one of the oldest inhabited parts of the city; it has been rebuilt many times since then, having been taken by the Danes in 1219 and later becoming a strategic fortification when Tallinn was an important medieval crossroads. Today, the castle upholds its illustrious legacy by housing the Parliament of Estonia.

Kadriorg Palace

Built in the eighteenth century for Catherine I of Russia, this Baroque palace offers another interesting piece of Estonian history. Abandoned by the Russian rulers, it was extensively renovated in the 1930s by Estonia's first president. It is of particular appeal for those on school trips, both for its buildings and meticulously designed grounds and as the site of the Art Museum of Estonia.
